Why Recycle Computers and Electronic Components?

Piles of Electronic Garbage

Of the 11 million Americans that are estimated to live within 1 mile of hazardous waste sites, 3 to 4 million are children under 18 years of age.

What are the risks posed to children by toxic or hazardous waste? One of the most vexing challenges that arises when attempting to address this question is the realization that most such waste exists as a complex mixture of many substances. Wastes are rarely segregated; most often, they are dumped together into pits or ponds, added to piles, etc, from which human exposure can eventually occur in the form of multiple contaminants in drinking water, airborne dust, crops, and other media.

Forms of Hazardous Waste:

Sources of Electronic Waste
  1. Lead in cathode ray tube and solder
  2. Arsenic in older cathode ray tubes
  3. Selenium in circuit boards as power supply rectifier
  4. Polybrominated flame retardants in plastic casings, cables and circuit boards
  5. Antimony trioxide as flame retardant
  6. Cadmium in circuit boards and semiconductors
  7. Chromium in steel as corrosion protection
  8. Cobalt in steel for structure and magnetism
  9. Mercury in switches and housing

The internal parts of these items are composed of tin, lead, cadmium, PVC and other harmful products. Tin and lead can be found in the circuit boards, cadmium in the batteries of the PC or laptop and lead again in the monitor. Currently almost three quarters of the heavy metals (lead, mercury and cadmium) found in landfills comes from this E-waste.
